Position Summary

The Midwife (SRH Officer) is responsible for delivering quality sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services at facility and community levels, in line with Tdh standards, national protocols, and humanitarian guidelines.

Under the supervision of the Health Manager / Health Supervisor or Health Team Leader, the role focuses on direct service delivery, clinical quality assurance, and routine monitoring of SRH interventions, including antenatal care (ANC), postnatal care (PNC), family planning, BEmONC support, and GBV clinical care.

The position operates with moderate autonomy, implementing activities within established frameworks, contributing to service quality improvement, and providing technical support to frontline health workers without formal line management responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Service Delivery and Quality Assurance

  • Provide quality SRH services including ANC, PNC, safe delivery support, family planning, neonatal care, and management of reproductive health conditions. 
  • Support implementation of BEmONC services in line with national and Tdh protocols. 
  • Identify and manage obstetric and gynecological complications within scope; refer complex cases appropriately. 
  • Ensure integration of SRH services with GBV response, including clinical management of rape (CMR). 
  • Maintain infection prevention and control (IPC) standards and universal precautions at all times. 
  • Promote respectful maternity care, confidentiality, and patient-centered approaches. 
  • Ensure rational prescription and administration of medications according to approved guidelines. 
  • Monitor service quality and flag clinical risks or gaps to the supervisor.

Community-Level SRH Support and Health Promotion

  • Support community outreach activities related to maternal and newborn health. 
  • Provide health education on ANC/PNC, breastfeeding, family planning, hygiene, and danger signs. 
  • Engage with community actors (e.g., TBAs, volunteers) to strengthen referral pathways. 
  • Promote early care-seeking behavior and continuity of care. 
  • Support follow-up of pregnant and lactating women and newborns where required.

Technical Support and Capacity Strengthening

  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance to CHEWs and community health volunteers during service delivery. 
  • Support adherence to SRH protocols and clinical standards. 
  • Identify practical capacity gaps and inform the supervisor for targeted support. 
  • Contribute to on-the-job coaching and orientation of support staff when needed.

Monitoring, Documentation, and Reporting

  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of patient records, registers, and reporting tools. 
  • Track key indicators (ANC visits, deliveries, PNC coverage, FP uptake, referrals). 
  • Support routine data collection and validation. 
  • Report clinical trends, challenges, and incidents to the supervisor. 
  • Contribute to weekly and monthly activity reports.

Coordination and Collaboration

  • Coordinate with health team members (nurses, doctors, nutrition, CP/GBV staff) for integrated service delivery.
  • Support referrals to higher-level facilities and other services (nutrition, protection, MHPSS).
  • Maintain working relationships with local health authorities and facility staff at operational level.
  • Participate in internal coordination meetings as required. 

Compliance, Safeguarding, and Risk Management

  • Ensure full compliance with Tdh Code of Conduct and safeguarding policies. 
  • Uphold confidentiality, dignity, and rights of patients, especially women and girls. 
  • Promote prevention of sexual exploitation and abuse (PSEA). 
  • Adhere to safety, security, and infection control protocols. 
  • Report incidents, risks, and safeguarding concerns promptly.

  • Provides survivor‑centred clinical management of sexual violence cases and integrates SRH services with protection and referral systems.
  • Infection Prevention, Hygiene & Patient Safety – L3
  • Ensures strict application of IPC protocols, universal precautions, and bio‑hazard prevention in all health activities.
  • Supervision & Support to Community Health Staff – L2
  • Supervises CHEWs and CHVs, supports skills development, and ensures adherence to protocols.
  • Clinical Documentation, Reporting & Referral – L2
  • Maintains accurate patient records, health registers, statistics, and ensures timely referrals and reporting.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Diploma or Degree in Midwifery/Nursing from a recognized institution
  • Valid practicing license.
  • Minimum 2–5 years of relevant experience in SRH/maternal health
  • Experience in humanitarian or low-resource settings is an asset
  • Strong expertise in primary healthcare systems, nutrition programs, and community health initiatives, with focus on SRH and GBV survivor care.

Languages

  • Fluency in English both written and spoken is required 
  • Knowledge of the local language (Tiv) is desirable; proficiency in other relevant languages such as Idoma or Egede is an added advantage.
  • Ability to write clear reports and effectively communicate findings
  • IT Knowledge  
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken); local language is an asset.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Familiarity with health data collection tools

Desirable

  • Experience with INGOs or similar organizations
  • Training in BEmONC or CMR
  • Knowledge of national SRH guidelines, MISP and humanitarian health standards.
